Network Storage Overview

IT department provide different options for Network and cloud based storage area for storing and sharing files to all Faculty/Staff and Students.

Network storage area is for data repository and share efficiency. Besides freeing up local storage space, network storage also support automated backup to prevent critical data loss.

Storage options for Faculty & Staff

  • OneDrive for Business - 1TB of storage capacity
  • Departmental Network Drives (S: Drive)
  • Your personal BWU Network Drive (H: Drive) – 600 MB capacity

Storage option for Students

  • OneDrive for Students - Unlimited Storage capacity
  • Your personal BWU Network Drive (H: Drive) – 200 MB capacity

How do I ...?

OneDrive for Business is a place where you can Store, Sync, and Share your files.  All files that you store in OneDrive for Business are private unless you decide to share them. You can easily share a file with everyone in by placing it in the Shared with everyone folder, for example. You can also share files with specified co-workers so you can collaborate on projects.


Instructions for Windows OR Mac Users

NOTE: You must be on the BW campus when running the setup for OneDrive the very first time! If you are prompted, choose work or school account. This is not a personal account.



  • Enter your BW email address in the first field. Next, click your cursor in the password field. You will not need to type your password! You will automatically be redirected to another page and logged in.



  • Your account has been activated! Next, click on SYNC to create a folder on your system.
  • >Wait a minute or so for this process to run.
  • NOTE: If you are setting up OneDrive for the first time, don’t worry about OneDrive Sync message. None of your files are syncing yet. It’s just setting up a destination for your files.
  • Windows users click Continue. Your folder will be located in your Windows Explorer.
  • Click the Windows Explorer Icon on the Task Bar at the bottom of your screen (left corner). You should now see a folder for OneDrive in your list of “Favorites.”
  • Saving files to your OneDrive account:
    • To save files to your OneDrive account, go to File menu of the program you are working in.
    • Click “Save As” and then choose your OneDrive Account from this list.
    • You can also use the drag and drop method while you are in Windows Explorer to move files you have stored in other locations into your OneDrive folder.
    • Mac Users
    • Mac users must install the “OneDrive for Business” app. To do so, go to: help.bw.edu and click Available Software and select “Apple Software for Everyone.”
    • Drag the “OneDrive for Business” icon into your Applications Folder.
    • Go to Applications and launch OneDrive for Business.
    • Click on Get Started
    • Enter your BW email address and password
    • Sign In
    • Leave the “Open at Login” and “Hide Dock” boxes checked
    • Click on the “Choose OneDrive for Business Folder Location button.
    • On the next screen you’ll simply click on the “Choose this Location” button.
    • Click the “Next” button to continue and you’re on your way!

  • Any files you store on your C:drive (the local drive of your device) should be synced to OneDrive. This guarantees you have access to them at any time, with or without an internet connection. The synced files are also safely backed up in case of device failure, loss, or theft. When all files are synced to OneDrive, it’s easy to change equipment when it’s time to get a new computer. Devices can be swapped out and all files re-synced from the cloud. Quick, easy, safe



NOTE: Even though your OneDrive account has unlimited storage, you are limited to the amount of storage on the hard drive of your personal device when it comes to the sync feature. If you need storage capacity beyond the limits of your device’s hard drive, you can store those files in OneDrive, but you will not be able to sync them. Call IT Support Services if you need assistance.



Accessing your OneDrive files from home:

  • There are two ways you can access your OneDrive files from home.
    • 1. Use BW’s Virtual Desktop (labs.bw.edu client. For assistance installing Virtual Desktop on your home computer, see IT Support Services online at help.bw.edu and search for “virtual desktop.” NOTE: Anytime you are finished and exiting Virtual Desktop, always remember to choose the “log off” option and not simply “X” (close) the program.

    2. Open a web browser (IE, Chrome, Firefox) and go to: http://onedrive.bw.edu.

What is OneDrive?

OneDrive is a personal 1 Terabyte storage area that is provided with your BW student e-mail account that allows you to upload files to a cloud storage and then access them from a web browser or client software. Files uploaded to your account are available only to you, unless you decide to share it with anyone else. Also you can grant permission to modify your file to any other OneDrive user, which allows you to effectively collaborate online on any type of documents.

How do I access to my OneDrive (Personal file storage area)?

Login to your BW email account from my.mail.bw.edu and look for OneDrive on the top menu

How to change/reset my OneDrive password 

OneDrive doesn't require Password if you are logging via your BW email account.  If you don't know your BW email password, please visit myaccount.bw.edu and reset your password.
