This document provides detailed, step-by-step instructions for backing up all email data from your BW Email account that is being closed and will have its service permanently cut off.
It is critical to perform these backups to an external storage device (e.g., a laptop, an external hard drive, or secure cloud storage) as the email account will soon be inaccessible.
Apple Mail
Apple Mail allows you to export entire mailboxes (folders) to the .mbox format, which preserves the folder structure and messages for later re-import into another Mac Mail installation or other compatible email clients.
Step 1: Export Mailboxes
- Open Mail on your Mac.
- In the Mailboxes list, select the mailbox (folder) you wish to back up (e.g., the Inbox for the retiring account, or a top-level folder if you created one).
- In the top menu bar, go to Mailbox Export Mailbox...
- A Finder window will open. Choose a secure location (e.g., an external hard drive) to save the
.mboxfile. - Click Choose.
Note: You must repeat this process for every mailbox (Inbox, Sent, Drafts, custom folders, etc.) you want to save.
Step 2: Export Calendar and Contacts (Recommended)
Mail export only handles emails. You should back up your associated calendar and contact data separately:
- Contacts: Open the Contacts app, select File Export Contacts Archive... or Export Export vCard... (for individual contacts or small groups).
- Calendar: Open the Calendar app, select the calendar you want to export, then select File Export Export... (to save as an
.icsfile).
